Reality?

Saw a discussion on a news channel on TV censorship and was a little appalled as how everyone was just blaming someone else.. be it government, audiences, people who own the networks, politicians and so on. No one wanted to take the mantle of cleaning up the act. Surprisingly, everyone agreed that the news channels have gone insane over the years and are nothing but mere entertainment channels delivering pitiful content. There is hardly any difference in those saas-bahu soaps and say a breaking news on ur favorite news channel. Compare that to the BBC and CNN of the world and your head will lay low in shame.

Of course, no channel or a reporter wants any censorship, especially government controlled. Recently, Delhi High Court delivered a judgement when there was a PIL against “Sach Ka Saamna”. It said that people should ‘switch off’ their TV if they don’t want to see a particular show. That was a shot in the arm for channels as they could go on and show any content (offensive or not) and garb it in the veil that “a viewer has a choice not to see it”. Does that give a right to the channel to air any content? Surprisingly, some of these channels have marquee names like Rajdeep Sardesai, Vir Sanghvi who are ace journalists and writers. Some of these channels are also big media houses who also have a print publication (Times group, Living Media, ABP) and so on. Most of the print publications have always exercised restraint and only printed material which is suitable for all. Its surprising how they have different yard stick when they move on a different mode of delivering news.

Certainly, censorship cannot be spoken in the same breath without talking about activism by media. The recent media activism brought changes in the society be it Ruchika case, or Jessica Lal in the past, but somewhere the truth is that media has been too quick or too late in delivering a judgement. Ruchika case was not touched by the same media for over a decade. Jessica Lal’s case was almost done with before media hit a jackpot. A trial by media is always more obscure and irrational, no matter how right they are. As a fourth estate of democracy, it can never take on the role of judiciary or the government or even the people. Actually, that’s where the eternal confusion is, as the fourth pillar, which side is media on? And if asked, the perpetual answer is ‘people’ or ‘junta’. Amusingly, that’s what every politician also says.

3 idiots… an inspiration

This is not about the controversy of the story and the credit…

Some outcomes..

  • A group of students claimed that 3 idiots inspired them into ragging their juniors…
  • Another set of students are claiming that they want to invent and have patents on their name…

So………

  • What if students give up studying like a parrot and don’t focus on marks?
  • What if students start committing suicide and blame the authorities for atrocities?
  • What if students stop what they are doing and start doing what they like (wildlife photography?)
  • Don’t be surprised if the cut offs for the next year in colleges are lower and the blame (or credit, whichever way you look at it) goes to 3 idiots.

Guess, some outcomes are desirable and some are not. Choice is still with the students. and as they say, being a parent is no mean task. Now the parents have to rationalize how an engineer-MBA-Banker is a good career option! I almost have that combo where I work.

Oh on a diff note, 3 idiots has become the highest grosser of 2009, thanks to people like me and you!

SlumDog Millionaire

SlumDog Millionaire

Movies about Mumbai (Bombay) life are quite fascinating but this one ups the ante. Much has been said about the acting abilities but the crisp editing is just beyond par excellence and so is direction. The boy (Jamal with 3 actors filling the slot) is quite charming but very real. It could be a neighbourhood boy in countless slums that we have.

The way the film has captured events in Mumbai for a decade, its amazing… From the riots in ‘93 to the beggars’ plight to children’s exploitation and weaving all this with a love story in the background. Oh yes, not to mention slum lords, game hosts, cops and havaldars, call centre agents, bade bhaiyya and variety of characters make it quite interesting. The story is great but probably a different director would have not given the same slick flick. Movie is fast paced, and each turn of events doesnt last for more than few minutes. The climax is as bollywood climaxes go.. full masala. We may even identify with some events or characters.

AR Rehman is just AR Rehman. Music is part of the film and not just a song around a tree or a dream. He has created a soothing music and set a tone for the film. Catch the Latika’s theme which runs across the film or other numbers…

The low point is then again the story of rags to riches. It doesnt look believable especially because of the language. Would you expect a slumkid to speak better english than most corporate execs in Mumbai? I cant digest that in the same city where the cops are mouthing words in choicest of Hindi, the criminal is talking in accented English. Where did he pick that up from? Leopold? or Jazz by the Bay? It is a basic flaw when you watch it, but then the audience is meant to be largely international, so it is justified. And that justification takes you away from the movie a little bit, makes you realise that its a drama, not real.

Already it has won so many awards or nominated for so many, I wonder if that will be itself a record. Currently, boasting of being in Top 10 in most countries and territories, catch it for a true mumbai flavour.

Short Term Memory Loss…

Ghajini …

I think I have quite grown to Aamir’s movies. i like them.. they have an aura of exclusivity, the stories are not copied, no other remake of Jo Jeeta, Raakh, Dil, Andaz Apna Apna, Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Mangal Pandey,  can be justified. No other actor would probably look good in those roles and maybe even do justice to the stories.

Ghajini, as we all know, is a remake of Tamil ‘Ghajini’, which is inspired by Memento. Now, Mr Nolan’s Memento is a different ballgame altogether. He has a craft, he is gifted and produces masterpieces which are not just a movie. We all admire him for what he brought to the Batman series and ‘The Dark Knight’ is a movie that has already made history. Memento was known for its confusing, yet gripping, story telling format where the movie goes back and forth every few minutes and the whole story is revealed in the end. But it also raised and answered more questions about the plot, than, say a Ghajini.

Most people agree that Ghajini was made (Hindi or Tamil) in a linear format (vs Memento) so that audiences would be able to grasp it. Else, people would not understand it completely and maybe even reject it irrespective of Star power. In hindi, at least in recent times, Ghajini is one of the most violent movies. The Censor has given a U/A certificate and maybe producers did cut a few more scenes to get that.

The acting by everyone other than Aamir (Jia, Asin, Ghajini…) is alright and nothing to write home about. No Darsheel like surprising star has emerged. Aamir is not over the top and actually has very few lines in teh movie. Most of the time, he is only expressing, which is brilliant. The movie is though, long and could have been shorter (maybe in the flash back scenes). Since it is a remake of Tamil film, lot of scenes have the tangent of south indian film making styles. Look at few songs, characters mouthing dialogues, or scene setups, and you will feel either alienated or attached depending on your sensibilities.

Some violence could have been avoided, or shortened. Of course, the theme is centred around it, so a bit of it is expected but it doesnt need to be gruesome. Aamir said that Memento is not the inspiration except for the basic concept of memory loss and I agree. Memento focusses more on memory loss condition and ghajini is more starghtforward. I was actually waiting, trying to figure out if he is going to forget and except for 2–3 times in the movie, his memory remains for a better part of the day. STML is not explored much as a theory or a condition, it is just added as a flavour to the movie. Thats a dissapointment, actually, considering most things have been handled well. Did you notice that the fleet of cars that Aamir uses has the number plates 1111,2111,3111,4111? Those are imp number plates and signifies that he is a tycoon. This detailing would have not been done by another director / producer and it shows up in just 1–2 seconds of the reel time.

All in all, its a must watch. For Aamir’s performance, for action which is surreal, for camera angles, for director’s version and maybe a little fro Asin.
But do watch memento (www.otnemem.com) Thats memento in reverse
